A 27-year-old Nigerian man suspected of being a member of Boko Haram and killing people in Nigeria during attacks on schools and a village has been arrested in Germany, the federal prosecutor said on Friday.</div>

The former president had on Tuesday given several reasons Buhari should not seek re-election in 2019.<br />
Reacting, Seun on his Instagram page said Obasanjo who should be in jail for his corrupt practices has no right to speak for Nigerians.<br />

He lamented the level of corruption and injustice perpetrated by military leaders without prosecution.<br />
He wrote, “When black people have no code how can we develop our culture? How many letters did u write to abacha? If there was justice in this land, na only civilians dey corrupt? A member of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, known for its anti-Muslim rhetoric, has surprised observers by converting to Islam.<br />
Arthur Wagner sat on the party’s executive committee in the state of Brandenburg but recently stepped down for reasons he says are unrelated.<br />

The 48-year-old, who is still a member of the party, told one newspaper that it was a “private matter”.<br />
On its website, the AfD proclaims that “Islam does not belong in Germany”.<br />
AfD supporters have regularly held anti-Islam rallies, and in last year’s federal elections the party used posters depicting housewives in niqab (face veils) to press home its message.<br />
But a spokesman for the party in Brandenburg has insisted that Mr Wagner’s conversion is “no problem” for the party.<br />
“Religion is a private matter. We support the constitutional right of religious freedom,” Daniel Friese was quoted as saying.<br />
Mr Wagner, who is of Russian origin, previously belonged to German chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.<br />
However in a video published in 2017, he is shown saying that although he had once been an admirer of Mrs Merkel, her decision to open the door to hundreds of thousands of migrants during the 2015-16 crisis had proved he was “totally wrong”. (BBC)<br />
Mr Wagner was also listed as previously belonging to a group called “Christians in the AfD”.<br />

The 37-year-old Donis (pictured), of New Jersey, was at home when his wife Nancy Donis, 38, told him she was going out for dinner, leaving him to take care of their five-year-old son, New York Post reported.<br />

But minutes after his wife left, he could not find his iPad and he turned on the Find My iPhone app to locate it.<br />
<br />
<br />
When the software showed the device moving towards an unknown location, and suspecting that his wife had taken it, Mr Donis decided to follow.<br />
<br />
He arrived at a house and opened an unlocked door.<br />
<br />
On the second floor, he found his wife in bed with her 58-year-old boss, Albert Lopez.<br />
<br />
He then recorded two short videos with an iPhone.<br />
<br />
However, he got a letter in July 2017 that he had been indicted on charges of felony burglary and unlawful surveillance by a grand jury.<br />
<br />
If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison for the offences.<br />
<br />
According to Yahoo News, he was charged with unlawful surveillance for shooting the videos and showing them to his wife’s family.<br />
<br />
Mr Donis has twice appeared in court over the incident, once in September 2017 and on Friday.<br />
<br />
Lopez, who filed the charges, said Mr Donis’s wife told him that she was separated from her husband.<br />
<br />
He said he was in fear when Mr Donis walked in on them, and kept telling him to get out.<br />
<br />
But Mr Donis told the New York Post: “I feel like it’s unjust what they’re doing to me.<br />
<br />
“It’s like I’m being punished twice.”<br />
<br />
“The defendant should be given a medal for the amount of restraint he showed when he entered that scene,” Mr Donis’s lawyer, Howard Greenberg told the jurors.

All but the most essential operations of the US government are affected including the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump’s inauguration.<br />

There were fears that all US offices overseas handling visa issuance and federal regulatory agencies, including those overseeing grants and contracts will remain closed while the shutdown lasts.<br />

However, the spokesman of the US Embassy in Abuja, Russell Brooks, told The Nation last night scheduled visa appointments would hold.<br />

He said: The State Department has informed the public on travel.state.gov that scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at posts overseas will continue during the lapse on appropriations as the situation permits.<br />
<br />
Earlier yesterday a State Department official said:<br />

“We are expected to still show up for work on Monday and figure it out from there,”<br />
<br />
In an email sent to State Department employees Friday morning, acting Director General William Todd said:  “a number of government activities would cease due to a lack of appropriated funding, and that a number of employees would be temporarily furloughed,” if a government shutdown were to occur.<br />
<br />
He did not specify which activities would stop or which employees should stay home next week.<br />
<br />
Heather Nauert, a spokesperson for the State Department, on Thursday said that the department had yet to make any decisions about which services it could provide during a shutdown but that “we will be prepared for all contingencies.”<br />

The shutdown was sparked by the Senate rejection of a short-term spending bill to keep the federal government running.<br />
<br />
A few Republicans joined Democrats in blocking the crucial measure, which would have provided short-term funding for the Pentagon and other federal agencies.<br />
<br />
The bill to fund the government until February 16 did not receive the required 60 votes.<br />
<br />
The Senate voted 50-48 to block the stopgap funding measure.<br />
<br />
The short-term spending bill was passed by the House on Thursday.<br />
<br />
This is part of the Democrats strategy to force President Trump and the Republicans to negotiate with them on illegal immigrants who are facing deportation.<br />
<br />
Trump, in a series of tweets,  accused the Democrats of  being more concerned with illegal immigrants than the country’s armed forces and “holding the military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration”.<br />
<br />
Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the Democrats’ insistence that the interim measure include protection for undocumented immigrants who arrived as children killed the deal.<br />
<br />
“Senate Democrats own the Schumer Shutdown,” she declared, referring to the minority leader, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, who met with Trump earlier Friday.<br />

“Tonight, they put politics above our national security, military families, vulnerable children, and our country’s ability to serve all Americans.”<br />

Much of the federal government officially shut down early Saturday morning after Senate Democrats, showing remarkable solidarity in the face of a clear political danger, blocked consideration of a stopgap spending measure to keep the government operating.<br />

But senators from both parties were scrambling for a new deal to reopen the government quickly, possibly just hours after the midnight deadline passed.<br />
<br />
With just 50 senators voting in favor, Senate Republican leaders fell well short of the 60 votes necessary to proceed on the spending measure, which had passed the House on Thursday. As the clock ticked toward midnight, when funding for the government was set to expire, senators huddled on the floor of the crowded Senate chamber, searching for some way forward.<br />

But even if the Senate had adopted such a bill, it would also have had to pass the House, and lawmakers simply ran out of time. The government shutdown was one year to the day after President Trump took office.<br />

A passenger jet with 168 people on board, has skidded off an icy runway, at Turkish Airport, and is left dangling perilously close to the SEA, the Daily Mail has reported.<br />

The passenger jet carrying 168 people came within metres of plunging into the sea, after it skidded off a icy runway as it landed at a Turkish Airport.<br />
<br />
Panic spread through the Boeing 737-800, as it stopped at the edge of the Black Sea, with its nose dangling precariously off of a cliff edge.<br />
<br />
Luckily for the passengers on-board, the wheels became stuck in the icy mud as it left the runway at Trabzon Airport, which may have prevented it from entering deep into the sea.<br />
<br />
Pegasus Airlines confirmed in a statement that there were no injuries among the 162 passengers on-board, as well as the two pilots and four cabin crew, after they were evacuated.<br />
<br />
The aircraft’s left jet engine was however ripped from its wing during the crash.<br />
<br />
<br />
One of the passengers, Fatma Gordu, said panic erupted on-board during the landing.<br />
<br />
“We tilted to the side, the front was down, while the plane’s rear was up. There was panic. People shouting, screaming”, she told State-run News Agency Anadolu.<br />
<br />
The Airport was temporarily shut before reopening on Sunday morning.<br />
<br />
Trabzon Governor, Yucel Yavuz, confirmed that all of the passengers and crew on-board escaped uninjured, saying: “We have taken all necessary measures. We will reopen the Airport to air traffic as soon as possible.”<br />
<br />
Flights have now resumed in and out of Trabzon.<br />

The leader of Britain’s anti-European Union UKIP Party said he had split with his new girlfriend after a newspaper published derogatory comments she made about Prince Harry’s fiancee Meghan Markle and black people.<br />

 Henry Bolton, 54, who became the ailing UK Independence Party’s fourth leader in a year when he was elected in September 2017, said he had ended his relationship with model Jo Marney after the “appalling” text messages she sent to a friend were published.<br />
Marney, 25, who began dating Bolton just after Christmas, had described U.S. actress Markle, whose father is white and mother is African-American, as a “dumb little commoner” and said “her seed with (sic) taint our royal family”, according to the texts printed in the Mail on Sunday newspaper of January 14, 2017.<br />
<br />
Marney also described black people as ugly.<br />
<br />
“The romantic element of the relationship is over,” Bolton told BBC radio, saying they had split up on Sunday night.<br />
<br />
“However appalling and insulting, those comments she made in those direct personal messages were … I honestly don’t believe those are her core beliefs.”<br />
<br />
Harry said Markle had been subjected to “outright sexism and racism” on social media when he revealed they were first dating in 2016 and that there had also been racial undertones in newspaper comment pieces.<br />
<br />
The couple announced in November that they were engaged and will marry in May.<br />
<br />
Led by the charismatic Nigel Farage, UKIP won nearly four million votes in 2015, 12.6 per cent of those cast, on its anti-EU platform, projecting it to the forefront of British politics even though it only managed to win one seat in parliament.<br />
<br />
Its success helped force former Conservative prime minister David Cameron, who once dismissed the party as being full of “fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists”, to agree to hold the 2016 referendum on whether to leave the EU and played a role in encouraging Britons to vote for Brexit.<br />
<br />
But UKIP has been riven by internal strife since the referendum as it struggles for direction and a clear purpose and it won just 1.8 per cent of the total votes cast in a national election last June.<br />
<br />
Marney was suspended from UKIP after the texts became public on Sunday and senior party figures called for Bolton, a former army infantry officer who also served in the police, to step down himself.<br />
<br />
He said:“People have been able to use Jo in order to attack me.<br />
<br />
“I have no intention of resigning and indeed the people who have been calling for my resignation are people who for some time have been trying to work to undermine the leadership of the party in any case.”<br />
<br />
He said there had not been a “cold parting of the ways” but his job had to take priority.<br />
<br />
“She is utterly devastated. I‘m not defending the comments she made; she’s not defending the comments she made.<br />
<br />
“Jo is incredibly upset as am I; I‘m going to stand by her and the family in terms of trying to put her life back together,” he said.

The lawmakers were describing how certain immigration programs operate, including one to give safe haven in the United States to people from countries suffering from natural disasters or civil strife.<br />

Reuters quoted one of the sources who was briefed on the conversation said that Trump said, “Why do we want all these people from Africa here?<br />

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a frequent Trump critic, said the president’s comment “smacks of blatant racism, the most odious and insidious racism masquerading poorly as immigration policy.”<br />

In an apparent response to his critics, Trump took to Twitter late on Thursday night.<br />

Trump tweeted: “The Democrats seem intent on having people and drugs pour into our country from the Southern Border, risking thousands of lives in the process.<br />

“It is my duty to protect the lives and safety of all Americans. We must build a Great Wall, think Merit and end Lottery & Chain. USA!”<br />

The programme that was being discussed at the White House is called Temporary Protected Status.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the Trump administration decided to end the status for immigrants from Haiti and Nicaragua.<br />
<br />
It gave the approximately 59,000 Haitian immigrants who had been granted the status until July 2019 to return home or legalise their presence in the U.S.<br />
<br />
Nicaraguans were given until January 2019.<br />
<br />
On Monday, Trump moved to end the status for immigrants from El Salvador, which could result in 200,000 Salvadorans legally in the United States being deported, beginning in September of 2019.

Soldiers in Côte d’Ivoire’s second largest city looted weapons from the base of an elite military unit overnight before setting it on fire, leaders of the faction said on Wednesday.<br />The soldiers, who were involved in a series of mutinies last year that tarnished the image of Côte d’Ivoire, one of Africa’s fastest growing economies, accuses the elite unit, known as the CCDO, of spying on them.<br />Residents of Bouake reported late on Tuesday hearing gunshots and heavy weapons fire between the rival factions, though they said the situation was calm after some early sporadic gunfire and businesses were operating normally.<br />“We entered the CCDO camp around midnight and took all of their arms and ammunitions,” one of the faction’s leaders, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.<br />“Their troops fled the camp but we are looking for them.”<br />A second leader of the former mutineers confirmed they had looted weapons stockpiles.<br />“We burned the CCDO camp and destroyed everything inside. Even their service vehicles were burned,” the second faction leader said.<br />There were no immediate reports of any casualties.<br />The CCDO is composed of soldiers, paramilitary gendarmes and police.<br />Côte d’Ivoire’s Defence Minister Hamed Bakayoko was not immediately available to comment on the clashes.<br />Army officials reached by Reuters declined to comment.<br />Bouake, located in the central region of the west African nation, was the epicenter of several months of army mutinies in 2017 that spread across the nation, forcing the government to yield to demands for bonuses and promotions.<br />Côte d’Ivoire, the world’s top cocoa grower, emerged from a decade-long political crisis as one of Africa’s fastest growing economies and a darling of international investors.<br />The 2017’s instability laid bare the dangerous divisions that still persist within an army cobbled together from rival rebel and loyalist factions at the end of a 2011 civil war.<br />.
