“I am tired of this calamity; it is better I die and go to rest in paradise”, he said at the end of the 10-minute video.</div>

According to Premiumtimes, in the video, delivered chiefly in Hausa, Mr. Shekau couldn’t hide his frustration on the continued hostility and loss of his supporters to government troops.</div>

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja signed Executive Order 5 to improve local content in public procurement with science, engineering and technology components.<br />
<br />
The Executive Order is expected to promote the application of science, technology and innovation towards achieving the nation’s development goals across all sectors of the economy.<br />
<br />
The president, pursuant to the authority vested in him by the constitution, ordered that all ‘‘procuring authorities shall give preference to Nigerian companies and firms in the award of contracts, in line with the Public Procurement Act 2007.’’<br />
<br />
<br />
The Executive Order also prohibits the Ministry of Interior from giving visas to foreign workers whose skills are readily available in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
It, however, notes that where expertise is lacking, procuring entities will give preference to foreign companies and firms with a demonstrable and verifiable plan for indigenous development, prior to the award of such contracts.

According to World Bank standards, living in extreme poverty is living on less than $1.90 (N680) per day. People living in extreme poverty are unable to meet even the barest minimal needs for survival.</div>

In 2015, the UN set up the Sustainable Development Goals, and the first of them is to “eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere by 2030”.</div>

However to achieve this globally, 90 people need to leave poverty every minute to eradicate poverty totally by 2030; and to achieve this in Africa, 57 people have to leave every minute; and in Nigeria, 12 people per minute.</div>

As you can imagine, this is not the case. In fact the opposite is the case. On the average, 9 people are entering extreme poverty every minute, and Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo are both responsible for the 9. And individually, Nigeria has about 7 people going into poverty every minute.</div>

For Nigeria, this is due to many reasons, first of all, population. Nigeria’s population is growing faster than its economy. Between 1990 and 2013, Nigeria’s population increased by 81 percent. And by 2050, according to the UN, Nigeria will be third most populous country in the world. Only behind India and China.</div>

And while poverty is billed to wildly increase in 2018, the IMF projects Nigeria’s GDP to rise by only 0.8 percent in 2018, after the 2016 recession slowed down the economy. Nigeria’s 2018 record budget (which President Buhari stood for 69 minutes to present, this was news for some reason) is running on a deficit, and will be funded by much borrowing with government debts already on the rise.</div>

On the contrary, in recent times, Nigeria’s recent dwindling oil wealth due to the global oil price reduction, with oil being the mainstay of its economy, meant its oil-dependent GDP was affected too. The country’s economy was hit hard by the recent recession in the country.</div>

Responding to those who have accused him of being silent on the issue, the General Overseer said “I am a Christian and I belong to the Christian Association of Nigeria which has a President. That is how to be under authority.”<br />

About 50 persons were murdered by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State in the first two days of January, 2018. There have also been several cases of kidnappings in some parts of the country. Reports say that the herdsmen started attack since the Benue State Government implemented the anti-grazing law, giving the herdsmen no space to feed their cows.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, nominated a Northern Christian, Edward Lametek Adamu, to the Senate, for confirmation as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to represent the North-West geo-political zone.<br />

Sahara Reporters alleged that Buhari’s nomination of Adamu put an end to a desperate scheme by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, to impose former Aso Savings boss, Usman Hassan Katsina.<br />

Sahara Reporters further revealed that Abba Kyari had attempted to stop the nomination of Adamu by nominating his candidate, an indigene of Katsina State.<br />

CBN sources told Sahara Reporters allegedly, that many of the staff within the apex bank had planned to stoutly resist any attempt to impose Katsina, who visits the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, weekly, on account of the huge fraud that occurred in Aso Savings.<br />

Although there have been several condemnations from opposing groups about the Federal Governments plan to establish cattle colonies in the states, the GOPRI group stands firm with the government plan and believes that the plan would reduce and possibly eliminate the killings between herdsmen and farmers in the states.</div>

However, Governor’s in the South East Region have rejected the Federal Government’s plan to establish cattle colonies. The governors believe there is no operational guide in the plan and would, therefore, cause more crisis in the country.</div>

The position of the South East Governors is that of lack of understanding in the nature of the policy. Nigerian’s do not seem to understand who the land would be allocated to, whether it is the federal government, the herdsmen or the owners of the farm. There is also the problem of clarity in the number of cattle currently in the country and how many cows would be allocated to one colony. The opposing Governors believes that the Federal Government needs to be more open in the nature of the plan to gain the confidence of the people and also to eliminate their fears.</div>

Despite doubts from some of the governors, GOPRI group emphasized that creation of the cattle colony would end the ongoing crisis and the killings it leaves in its wake.</div>

GOPRI believes that the cattle colony policy which intends to acquire 10,000 hectares of land in each of the 36 states of Nigeria approved by governors would provide housing for cattle’s and the herdsmen and there would be enough space to graze the cattle on pastures. Therefore lives of the herdsmen and cattle are protected and there would be no crisis between the herdsmen and the farmers.</div>

The group also emphasized that if the plan is well executed that the implementation of the cattle colony would create about 322,000 new employment for Nigerians.</div>

He said it was a good idea that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was able to set up a committee to look into the same grey areas which featured prominently in the deliberations of the 2014 Conference.<br />

Jonathan had in the first quarter of 2014 inaugurated the 492-member body headed by Justice Idris Kutigi, which after about four months, submitted its report on which the majority agreed on several knotty issues problems ailing the country.<br />

Once queried on why he did not implement the report, the former president had said the time between when the report was turned in and the 2015 election was too short to do anything tangible.<br />

The inadequate supply of electricity is not the reason why the country’s economy is not growing, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said.<br />

According to Fashola, experts who attribute the slow growth of Nigeria’s economy to power supply challenges make such arguments without facts and are not correct.<br />

This is coming as he directed power distribution companies to find ways of collecting the outstanding debts owed them by public sector organisations from state governments, adding that the Federal Government had verified and given approval for the payment of its own portion of the claims.<br />
<br />
The minister stated these at a civil society engagement workshop on the Power Sector Recovery Programme in Abuja on Wednesday evening.<br />
<br />
Fashola said, “We hear all our so-called experts who say (non-availability of) power is why the economy of Nigeria is not growing. That is not factual and it is not correct. At the time when we had less power in 2013 and 2014, the economy of this country was growing at seven per cent per annum.<br />
<br />
“We had less power then than we have now, but the economy was growing. So that is not an honest statement to make. It is not an honest statement at all. That is not the reason. Power will clearly contribute to the growth but power is not the reason why the economy is not growing.”<br />
<br />
He further argued that some industrialised nations of the world were still faced with power supply problems, stressing that Nigeria was importing goods from such countries.<br />
<br />
Fashola stated, “I have also heard of the need for industrialisation and yes, that’s true. But there are nations that haven’t solved their power problems and are industrialised faster than us, and who are solving them and industrialising at the same time. Today, we import things from India; all of India is not powered.<br />
<br />
“So, let us stop repeating the stories that we have been told and get more current information about what is happening. We know that the industries are not getting enough power, but the correct statement is not because there is no power. The reality is that we have 7,000MW and we are selling 5,000MW.<br />

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has ordered state Commissioners of Police to, as a matter of urgency, disarm all militias, vigilantes and other armed protective units set up by state governors  across the country.<br />
<br />
Idris has warned state governors who have set up such armed security outfits that they have no powers to do so.<br />
<br />
The IGP, who gave the warning at a meeting with Commissioners of Police and officers held at the Police Forces Headquarters in Abuja, said the Nigerian constitution has made it clear that only formal security agencies were empowered to carry arms and ammunition.<br />
<br />
He said anyone that violates the law under any pretext would be held accountable.<br />
<br />
The IGP, however, did not state whether or not the same law applies to Fulani herdsmen, who have been accused of carrying sophisticated weaponry and killing of innocent citizens across the country.<br />
<br />
The IGP, who made it clear that it was the responsibility of the police to provide security for citizens of Nigeria, said:<br />
<br />
“Everybody is aware we are entering a very tedious and serious situations in this country.<br />
<br />
“Political issues are coming up to the fore and I believe officers must gear up in our various locations, in our various responsibilities to ensure that we provide law and order all over Nigerian.<br />
<br />
“As police officers, all of us know our duties.<br />
<br />
“There is no police commissioner that has served less than 20-25 years<br />
<br />
“There are lots of issues that should be considered very seriously.<br />
<br />
“We are now coming into a political arena. Commands should be very conversant about the arming of militia men or vigilantes.<br />
<br />
“Before a vigilante is established by government, you must have a bye-law, which must be passed by the House of Assembly.<br />
<br />
“It is the responsibility of the Commissioners of Police to study these bye-laws and see how it conforms with the constitution and other laws of this country.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“But through the connivance of some police officers you have a command arming militia men under several names; these I think our officers are to brace up to face these challenges.<br />
<br />
“No no government in this country has the responsibility to approve prohibited firearms to any Nigerian under any guise.<br />
<br />
“And I think it is the responsibility of CP’s of commands to put close watch to the activities of some of these governors that are arming individuals against the laws of this country.<br />
<br />
“All of us are aware about these prohibited firearms.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“You cannot give approval to any individual to own a pistol. You cannot give an approval to any individual to own an AK-47, rifle.<br />
<br />
“These are prohibited weapons and only the government has that authority to give that approval.<br />
<br />
“So I want to call on our Commissioners of Police of various commands: you have to be on the close watch [against] these abuse of authority at various levels.”

The Federal Government is planning to stop the Nigerian Customs Service from raiding markets to seize imported rice, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, has said.</div>

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday warned that his government would no longer tolerate wanton killings and kidnapping by hoodlums.<br />
<br />
President Buhari also vowed that those involved in the murder of innocent persons would be made to face the wrath of the law.<br />
<br />

He explained that the rise in the level of violent crimes across Nigeria was having a negative impact on national development.<br />
<br />
The President, who spoke in Port Harcourt while declaring open the 9th General Assembly of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, said he was saddened by the killings in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The theme of the event is, ‘Community policing as a catalyst to crime prevention: The role of traditional rulers.’<br />
<br />
Represented by the Minister of Interior, Abduraham Dambazau, the President said, “I am very worried and saddened about the persistent killings and kidnappings happening in our country, especially the wastage of innocent lives in different parts of the country by whatever means it is done, particularly in Benue State.<br />

<br />
“I have therefore directed that no effort should be spared in identifying and bringing to justice all those that are carrying out the acts.<br />
<br />
“I have therefore directed the Chief of Army Staff to relocate to the North East to ensure that the activities of Boko Haram are stopped.”

A Civil Society group, Movement For Nigeria has revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo converted some national  assets into personal use during his time as President.<br />

The group said the action of the ex-president amounted to stealing of assets belonging to Nigerians and called for his immediate prosecution by anti graft agencies.<br />

Addressing journalists in Akure on Monday, Olaiya Ayomide, National Co-ordinator of the group listed the national assets to include Obasanjo Farms Ota, Bell University, amongst others.<br />

<br />
He expressed surprise on the inability of successive administrations to recover such national assets converted to personal properties by Obasanjo.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said in the interest of justice, equity and fairness, consistent with the treatment meted out to other treasury looters, the federal government must immediately take over all the assets that Dr. Obasanjo acquired with Nigeria's money.<br />
<br />
<br />
He urged the President Buhari administration not to allow itself to be blackmailed by the ex-president, saying such has become his antics once he is being investigated.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said Nigerians are of the worn out strategy of corrupt individuals jumping into public criticism of any government of the day so that they can claim they are being persecuted for their outspokenness once the nation's anti-corruption institutions begin probing or prosecuting them.<br />

According to Ayomide, Obasanjo became an overnight critic of the Buhari administration only after finding out that the anti-corruption agencies have traced several of the high-profile theft of public fund to him or his cronies.<br />

He explained that, "In fact, it is most worrisome that his days of appropriating our commonwealth date back to his first coming as a military leader when appropriated Operation Feed the Nation (OFN) and converted same into Obasanjo Farms Nigeria (OFN) Limited. This was to later metamorphose into his current Ota Farm. He has therefore converted Federal Government property into his personal asset in what has remained one of the world's worst case of abuse of office. <br />

"This same farm in Ota has been used as a conduit for siphoning public funds using bogus contract for the supply of livestock at inflated prices to the Presidency during popular festivities and holidays. The practice remained in place until the present government put a stop to it as part of cost saving measures and to judiciously use public funds. It remains to be seen if this discontinuation of the fraudulent contract is one of the grouses that the former president has against Nigerians and the basis on which he is today doing everything to punish us all by instigating instability."<br />

Abayomi said the rot in the power sector is equally a direct consequence of the theft of billions of naira which  Dr. Obasanjo claimed he invested in the sector.<br />

He said the money had been the subject of several investigation by the National Assembly, including the $10.6 billion probe.<br />

"Unfortunately, death threat and blackmail made federal lawmakers to abandon the investigation in all instances. It is reassuring that one particular anti-graft agency has now made sufficient headway to file charges against Obasanjo, which has now made him to become an emergency critic just so that he can alleged witch-hunt.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
"Several of the ministers that served under Obasanjo in his eight year as a civilian president have also begin to cooperate with the relevant law enforcement agencies that are investigating money stolen under his government in exchange for lessened punishment. The feelers out there are that their testimonies indicted their former boss and also exposed non-public officers that colluded with him using NGOs as cover. Those indicted with Obasanjo are the ones he has now invited to form an alliance that will give them the same level of influence as an opposition party under his supposed Coalition for Nigeria. The strategy as we have been made to understand is that anyone of them that is now arrested or arraigned for corruption will simply claim to be a victim of vendetta," he said.<br />

He urged the government to have the courage to tell citizens when it is being blackmailed into dropping corruption investigations or cases against high-profile former office holders so that the decision to accede to their demands can be subject to public debate because citizens will always back the government to combat graft and not succumb to any arm-twisting tactics from someone like Obasanjo.
