Buhari 2019: Two contradictory statements emerge from IBB

There is massive confusion following two divergent statements credited to a former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida.<br />

The first statement which was issued by Mr. Babangida’s spokesperson. Kassim Afegbua, conveyed Mr. Babangida’s misgivings about President Muhammadu Buhari and went further to demand that the president step aside by 2019 to allow the younger generation decide the country’s future.<br />
<br />
Mr. Babangida, head of a military junta from 1985 to 1993, said Nigeria has reached a stage where it must dump “analogue” leaders for “digital” younger generation to make the country competitive in a fast-changing world.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
He said Nigerians should not vote for Mr. Buhari, who he accused of mismanaging the lingering herdsmen crisis that has left hundreds dead this year alone.<br />
<br />
He also backed calls for restructuring, especially devolution of powers, and slammed the ruling All Progressives Congress for being a disingenuous political party.<br />
<br />
“While offering this advice, I speak as a stakeholder, former president, concerned Nigerian and a patriot who desires to see new paradigms in our shared commitment to get this country running,” Mr. Babangida, 76, said.<br />
<br />
However, shortly after the statement became media sensation and drew a deluge of reactions from Nigerians far and near, another statement emerged countering the former leaders’ initial statement.<br />
<br />
The second statement was far shorter than the first one signed by Mr. Afegbua, containing only a few paragraphs about herdsmen attacks and the prevailing political atmosphere.<br />
<br />
The second statement, released by PRNigeria, a pro-government public relations firm, portrayed Mr. Babangida as rebuking his spokesperson, Mr. Afegbua, for putting out words that didn’t reflect his position.<br />
<br />
“Let’s me categorically state that as a former President and Statesman, I have unfettered access and channel of communication with the highest authorities in the country without necessary going public with a sensational statement. Therefore, the views expressed in the alleged statement are not mine but that of the writer,” Mr. Babangida was quoted as saying by PRNigeria, which said it had previously published uncontroverted statements from the former military ruler in the past.<br />
<br />
The second statement was personally signed by Mr. Babangida himself.<br />
<br />
The former president said a two-party political system is one of the crucial ways forward for Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“I still believe in a two-party system as the best option for Nigeria,” Mr. Babangida said, according to the PRNigeria’s version.<br />
<br />
But Mr. Afegbua, appearing on Channels Television Sunday night, said the statement he signed reflected the views of Mr. Babangida, whom he said participated in the drafting process and fully endorsed the final version that was circulated on Sunday afternoon.<br />
<br />
The long-time spokesperson of Mr. Babangida said some elements sympathetic to Mr. Buhari amongst the Babangidas were responsible for the statement.<br />

MY COUNSEL TO THE NATION –BY GENERAL IBRAHIM BADAMASI BABANGIDA, GCFR<br />
<br />
My attention has been drawn to a press statement on the State of the nation with a particular reference to 2019 general elections and beyond.<br />
<br />
Let’s me categorically state that as a former President and Statesman, I have unfettered access and channel of communication with the highest authorities in the country without necessary going public with a sensational statement. Therefore, the views expressed in the alleged statement are not mine but that of the writer.<br />
<br />
However, with due respect to individual opinion and constitutional rights, it is worrisome that Political events and civil unrest in many parts of the country have raised many questions on the governance and unity of our great nation. Indeed 2018 has been inundated with political clamours and hot debates over the corporate existence of this country. Many of contributions, including constructive criticisms and engagements, have shown greater concerns for the corporate existence of Nigeria beyond 2019 general elections.<br />
<br />
It will be recalled that in my recent message on this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, I specifically expressed the dire need for proactive measures to stop farmers/herders clashes in the middle belt as well as Cattle rustling, armed robbery, Kidnapping, gangsterism and Cultism in other parts of the country.<br />
<br />
Our security agencies have to step up surveillance with more efforts on intelligence gathering towards ensuring maximum security of life and property.<br />
<br />
Recent happenings and utterances by political gladiators are alarming and not in the interest of common man that is already overstretched and apparently living from hand to mouth due to precarious economic conditions.<br />
<br />
Despite all these challenges, I am optimistic that the political actors will play within the ambits of political norms and decorum to ameliorate the problems facing our society now.<br />
<br />
I am a realist that believes in all issues in a democratic atmosphere are sincerely discussed and resolved in the spirit of give-and-take. Since after my military years that metamorphosed to being the only Military President in the history of Nigeria and my civilian life, I always have one clear objective that freedom can only be achieved through democracy.<br />
<br />
Some people find this freedom as an avenue for eroding democracy by antics of hate speeches under the guise of religion, tribal or self-imposed mentorship. This trend of pitching political class and the people against one another is unhealthy and must be discouraged by all and sundry.<br />
<br />
The clamour for re-alignment of governance in the country as we are approaching the 2019 election year is a welcome development only if the agitations are genuinely channelled through appropriate channels of law and order and the observance of the supremacy of the Constitution. Therefore, any attempt outside this circle of democratic tenants is deceptive and divisive idea capable of plunging our political journey into disarray.<br />
<br />
Our present political parties and their structures need parameter pillars that will make them stronger with unique ideologies. However, our present political parties need surgical operations that will align them into a reasonable number. I have been an advocate of a two-party system but in our present reality in Nigeria, our political parties can fusion into a strong political association or party that can form a formidable opposition to a ruling party.<br />
<br />
As students of history, we are aware that many advanced democracies have two distinct ideological political parties, with a handful of smaller political groupings that serve as buffer whenever any of the known political parties derailed or became unpopular. I still believe in a two-party system as the best option for Nigeria.<br />
<br />
It is high time that we engage in constructive dialogue on national issues in order to have a political solution to our myriad of problems. It is sad that Nigeria had its fair share of conflicts, and we cannot continue to fall back to those dark years of bloodshed.<br />
<br />
As a people, now is the time to come together to address all Communal conflicts and criminality under any guise so as to unite the country in line with the vision of our founding fathers.nation, we can forge ahead in the task of building a more prosperous nation.<br />

Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CMN) has received a new member in the person of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.<br />
<br />
The former president registered in Ogun state at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Oke-Ilewo Abeokuta.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo said the coalition is on course to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 nationwide.<br />
<br />
“This will be a movement of the people, CN will emerge victorious in 2019”, he predicted.<br />
<br />
The former leader’s comment is a sign that the coalition will register to become a political party.<br />
<br />
It should be noted that CN was launched yesterday in Abuja at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.<br />
<br />
Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors, Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Donald Duke were in attendance.<br />
<br />
Speaking at the event, Oyinlola said the group is not yet a political party.<br />
<br />
Oyinlola said for it to make electoral impact in the manner described by the former President, they would need to follow the constitution and register it as a political party.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo suggested the formation of the movement in his recent statement on President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration.

The Senate has said it has been vindicated on the rejection of the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.<br />

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, who briefed journalists in Abuja on Thursday, announced that a Federal High Court had ruled that the upper chamber of the National Assembly had the powers to confirm or reject his appointment.<br />
<br />
Sabi-Abdullahi made a copy of the ruling available to journalists, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent.<br />
<br />
The Senate’s spokesperson said, “We are pleased with this judgment and we want to salute Nigeria’s judiciary for always rising up to the occasion to protect our democracy and deepen our democratic processes.”<br />

The Senate had rejected Magu’s appointment bases on a report by the Department of State Services which disqualified him.<br />
<br />
The lawmakers had also placed an embargo on confirmation of appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari which required legislative approval, to protest against Presidency’s position that some appointments did not require Senate’s approval.<br />
<br />
Sabi-Abdullahi stated that the embargo would remain until Magu is replaced.

The President said this when he received a delegation from Eni, an oil company led by the Chief Upstream Officer, Mr Antonio Vella at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday.<br />
<br />
He said extra funds outside the provision of 2018 budget “will be deployed to infrastructure projects like roads, rail, and power for the good of our people, and for the development of the country.’’<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the 2018 budget proposal was predicated on 45 dollars per barrel by the Executive, and the Senate adjusted it to 47 dollars per barrel.<br />

However, oil prices have presently risen to more than 70 dollars per barrel.<br />
<br />
Buhari also appreciated Eni for its upcoming investments in the oil industry, which included rehabilitation of Port Harcourt refinery, and the building of a new one?<br />
<br />
“In my first coming, all our refineries were working. Port Harcourt used to refine 60,000 barrels per day, and it was later upgraded to 100,000 barrels.<br />
<br />
“Kaduna and Warri were also working optimally, and we used to satisfy the demand of the local market.<br />
<br />
“We equally exported 100,000 barrels of refined petrol. Now, no refinery is performing up to 50 per cent. It is a disgraceful thing.’’<br />
<br />
Leader of the Eni delegation, Vella, said his organisation had presented a technical proposal to the NNPC to rehabilitate the Port Harcourt refinery, and also done a feasibility study on a new refinery of up to 150,000 barrels per day capacity.<br />
<br />
“Site selection has been completed, and 50 new graduates have already arrived in Italy for a training that will last seven months.<br />
<br />
“There are other upstream initiatives, and a deep water project, with estimated expenditure of 13 billion dollars,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
According to Vella, the oil company also plans to double power generation capacity from its plant in Delta State from its present 500 MW to 1,000 MW at a cost of about 750 million dollars in the process.

It said it would, therefore, be wrong to insinuate that the recent killings happened because President Muhammadu Buhari is a Fulani man.</div>

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed these in a video he posted on his Facebook page. He insisted that the recent spate of killings by herdsmen in parts of the country had nothing to do with Buhari being Fulani.</div>

Yusuf was involved in an accident while riding a bike in Abuja last month. He was taken to Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, where he underwent a surgery.<br />

He sustained a head injury and also broke a limb in the accident which happened in the nation’s capital.<br />

In a statement on Friday, Aisha, wife of the president, expressed appreciation to the medical team.<br />

She also thanked Nigerians for their prayers towards her son’s recovery.<br />
