Bishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) have flayed plans by the Federal Government to create colonies for herdsmen’s cattle, saying such move using “taxpayers’ money” would amount to “grave injustice and corruption of the highest order.”<br />

This formed part of the welcome address on behalf of the bishops, by the Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, The Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, at the Standing Committee meeting of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), at the Cathedral Church of St. Barnabas, Sabo-Oke, Diocese of Kwara, Ilorin, Kwara State, with the theme: The Poverty of Riches.<br />

Expressing their disapproval of the establishment of cattle colonies across the country, as earlier proposed by the government, they noted that “the move treats a set of people with unwarranted special preference, making them indigenes of all regions of the country. More so, they are private businessmen who take away all proceeds of the business, not sharing with either their host communities or the government.<br />
<br />
“We wish to re-echo to the Federal Government, states and individuals involved, the recommendation already made earlier, that ranches should be built in their own localities for modern animal husbandry. In some parts of Nigeria, people are already grappling with high population growth and land does not expand. Nobody’s land should, therefore, be taken forcefully or be given to another person under any guise. It will be grave injustice and corruption of the highest order to spend tax payers’ money on the private business of a set of people.”<br />

The address, which also focused on the 2019 elections, called on politicians to work harder to deliver on campaign promises, stating “Nigerians are still yearning for the dividends of democracy, not another round of empty promises. We wish to urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work harder to make registration of voters as smooth as possible. It is not expected that the challenges faced in registration in 2015 should still be there since INEC has had a long space of time to improve on their work.<br />

“Whatever will disenfranchise any Nigerian should not come from INEC and should be avoided by all. We also urge all eligible citizens to get registered ahead of the general election. Your vote is your power and your vote will count.”<br />

Speaking on what they described as the seeming “indifference” of the Federal Government towards the killings by herdsmen in various parts of the country, they called for more proactive efforts to address the issue.<br />
<br />
“The standing committee wishes to reiterate the call of our bishops at their last retreat and call on the president to take decisive, swift and pragmatic steps toward stopping the killing permanently. In addition, government must disarm these murderous herdsmen. It should, therefore, not be allowed to degenerate any further in the interest of all,” they stated.<br />

They also called for urgent efforts to tackle fuel scarcity, as well as an upward review of the current minimum wage, which they said, was not realistic compared to current realities.<br />
<br />
Encouraging Nigerians not to cease in fervent prayers for the country, they urged “security agencies to double their efforts in the fight against everything constituting a threat to the peace of the nation.<br />
<br />
In his address, Provincial Archbishop and Bishop of Kwara, Most Reverend Dr Olusegun Adeyemi, highlighted the significance of the Standing Committee meeting.<br />
<br />
He called on Christians, who had become distracted by worldly things, to retrace their steps and embrace God, stating that “when insight is lost, priorities become lopsided; when insight is lost, decisions become ungodly.”<br />
<br />
Deputy Chief of Staff/Special Adviser, Administration and Finance to the Senate President, Honourable Gbenga Makanjuola, who represented Senate President Bukola Saraki, urged the church to refocus efforts on seeking divine intervention for Nigeria’s unity, and those in positions of authority.<br />
<br />
The meeting was attended by all the archbishops, bishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), traditional rulers, mothers’ union/women’s guild/girls’ guild, among others.<br />

The National Chairman of the United Progressive Party, UPP, Chekwas Okorie, has said President Buhari’s four years is a disaster, another four years for PMB will be Nigeria’s nunc dimittis.<br />
Okorie said his party is in support of any move that will save the country from the bad governance of President Buhari even though the UPP has zoned its presidential ticket to the South-East geo-political zone.<br />
He recalled that at the non-elective national convention of UPP, in Awka, Anambra State on June 29, 2017, the Convention ratified the zoning of the party’s presidential slot for the 2019 election to the South-East geopolitical zone.<br />
The ratification by the highest organ of the party remains sacrosanct. It will take a duly convened National Convention to set it aside or modify it. The position is that a presidential candidate from the South-East geopolitical zone shall fly the UPP Presidential flag in 2019.<br />
On the issue of devolution of power, referendum, state police and community policing, Okorie said, Gov. El Rufai is entitled to his opinion. He further stated that maybe the All Progressives Congress, APC, is stuck with President Buhari without any alternative option as a presidential candidate for the 2019 presidential election.a

It was gathered that the intense lobby resulted in certain underground meetings by the Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, with Governors of the North-East and Politicians from the geopolitical zone in the remote Yankari Games Reserve in Bauchi, recently.<br />

As gathered, some Governors, Senators, and House of Representatives Members principally from the North-East, recently touted to have teamed up with the former President in the newly formed Coalition for Nigeria Movement, CNM, had begun strategic meetings with the Gombe State Governor, where he had laid bare his ambition to vie for the PDP Presidential ticket.<br />

“Through Traditional Rulers and some Political Leaders of thoughts in the North-East, we have made representations to Atiku to shelve his ambition and consider working for a far younger politician with a record of good governance”, explained one of the participants at the strategic retreats at Yankari.<br />

It was further gathered that Atiku has not made a formal or informal attempt at consulting with Obasanjo on his ambition, for fear of a repeat of a previous experience in which the former President used Atiku’s visit to him in Ota, Ogun State, to lampoon him later in Yola, in the days of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.<br />

According to Alhaji Mohammed Toski, an Atiku Associate, the former Vice President is wary of a repeat of such embarrassment.<br />

Another insider in Atiku’s camp, however, stated that Obasanjo, through Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Governor, Osun State, a mutual friend of both men, had told Atiku that Obasanjo was willing to help his former Vive into roles as a Global Statesman.<br />

“There are big roles that Atiku can play at the global stage in furtherance of democracy and opposition politics.<br />
<br />
“Baba may be amenable to inducting Atiku into these roles”, explained the source privy to the lobby.<br />
<br />
It is however, not clear if Atiku is prepared to accept the offer, considering what some insiders have described as the immense goodwill he enjoys from politicians across the country.<br />

Other details from Atiku’s camp suggest that the former Vice President may not readily succumb to this offer, or back down on the PDP Presidential ticket.

Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday said that he will defect from APC to PDP or any other political party if his people so wish.<br />

Ortom said this yesterday when he received Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose who paid him a condolence visit over the killing of 78 persons by suspected herdsmen in January.<br />
<br />
Governor Fayose in his speech, called on Governor Ortom to leave APC and move over to PDP where he will be well catered for. He accused the Buhari-led government and the APC of neglecting one of their own states.<br />
<br />
In his response, Governor Ortom said he will defect to anyother party if his people so wish him to.<br />

''I am a member of the APC but I cannot keep quiet when my people are being annihilated, I will not accept that because I cannot be Governor over dead people. I’m not a dead man either.<br />
<br />
The responsibility of enforcing the law is that of the federal government. That is why I have joined the voices calling for the restructuring of the country. Because we cannot have an IGP who is the mouthpiece of Miyetti Allah. And we cannot have a minister who should be protecting the territorial integrity of this country coming out to say it is foreigners that are responsible for the killings. We cannot have a security architecture that is not ready to protect lives and property. That allow herdsmen carry guns and displaying it openly.<br />

Today herdsmen have also taken over kidnapping in the country from North to South because they have guns and are being protected by the IGP and when you talk they start calling you names. I must send a message that Samuel Ortom is not a drowning man. I was a nobody but God lifted me to several important position in life, so I know where I’m coming from, I’m not a drowning man. I dropped out of school in 1979 but I hold a Doctorate Degree today. After passing through several leadership positions in this country today I am a Governor and I’m doing my job. Now it is clear that our country must be restructured for the tenets of rule of law to be respected.<br />

Any herdsmen that is not comfortable with the grazing law should go to Kano where the Governor has requested that they come. Today because of the activities of herdsmen in Benue state over 60,000 of our children can no longer go to school and are residing in seven IDPs camps across the state. They have truncated the education of our children. It very painful. To compound the problem the crisis in Cameroon has spilled to Kwande and we have opened two camps where 7,000 persons are being housed, so on the whole we have nine IDPs camps in Benue state.<br />

After the killings of the 73 people the killings are still continuing almost on a daily basis and more people are coming into the IDPs camps. “Though I read that Mr. President has approved the deployment of the military, I thank the President though I have not been communicated officially but I hope it will help in restoring peace and normally. Regrettably his directive to the IGP to relocate to Benue was not obeyed and he also failed to do his job. We are calling for his resignation. Such people cannot work for Mr. President he needs better people to assist him including the Minister of Defence. These are bear footed people who have nothing to offer. I commend the National Assembly for rejecting the biased report of the IGP which portrayed him as the mouthpiece of Miyetti. I am a member of the APC and about the issue of joining another vehicle, Benue people are here and they are hearing you. I cannot decide for Benue people, the people will decide, it is what they want that I will want. Anything Benue people say I should do, I will do.” he said

 Yusuf Buratai, just like his son, served the military, with distinction, honor and valour. Little was known about his birth and early childhood, however, In 1942 Alhaji Yusuf Buratai (Senior) the father of current COAS joined the West African Army at the tender age of 18. He fought in World War II in 1945, especially the war in Burma.<br />

Yusuf Buratai, was a non commissioned officer in the Royal West African Frontier Force and World War II veteran.  Buratai, joined the West African Army in 1942.<br />

 The Burma Campaign in the South-East Asian theatre of World War II was fought primarily between the forces of the British Empire and China, with support from the United States, against the forces of the Empire of Japan, Thailand, and the Indian National Army. British Empire forces peaked at around 1,000,000 land, naval and air forces, and were drawn primarily from British India, with British Army forces (equivalent to 8 regular infantry divisions and 6 tank regiments), 100,000 East and West African colonial troops, and smaller numbers of land and air forces from several other Dominions and Colonies.<br />

<br />
 The Burmese Independence Army was trained by the Japanese and spearheaded the initial attacks against British Empire forces. Buratai Senior later joined the services of escorting ships from Lagos to Cotonou and Cape Town in South Africa.<br />

<br />
The 115-year-old war veteran died at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital where he was being treated for undisclosed ailment. Buratai, who fought in World War II, is survived by one wife, 15 children and many grandchildren.<br />

Those who knew Yususf  Burati back in the days continued to tell tales of his courage and valour . While in the service of escorting ships from Lagos to Cotonou and Cape Town in South Africa, Yusuf was described as a very fearless, disciplined and highly professional officer.<br />

This certainly explains why President Buhari  in a statement commiserating with his family stated that his service to Nigeria will always be appreciated and remembered. He further noted that Buratai’s years of service to the nation epitomised by courage, skill, determination and devotion has been rightly bequeathed to his son, who is diligently serving the nation.<br />

He saw action during the Second World War and fought gallantly. He is a highly respected community leader  and an opinion leader of great repute. He will not be forgotten in a hurry. At community level he is seen as a vibrant leader who was a great promoter of peaceful co-existence, development and the unity of the country.<br />

The successful career of his son in the military has been severally attributed to proper upbringing by him. Little wonder,  Buratai junior is going down in history as  one of Nigeria most revered army chief in Africa and indeed, the world at large; he has reached a grand pinnacle with his numerous achievements, leading the Nigerian Army to completely decimate the Boko Haram menace which threatened the very existence of the nation. Though, the heights great men like Buratai reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night and also got directions from veterans like his father.<br />

Tukur Yusufu  Buratai, the illustrious son of late Yusuf Buratai is a Nigerian Lieutenant general and the current Chief of Army Staff of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a position he was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2015.  He was commissioned in 1983 and has had multiple command, administrative, and instructional appointments.

I died here in Nigeria but woke up when they were taking me to the mortuary. That was the first time I had a seizure in my house but my wife stood by me. God would keep on blessing my wife; I believe that God gave me my wife and I always thank him for her. I bless God that she stayed despite everything that happened to me. They were taking me to a mortuary but to God be the glory, my hand moved and that was the point they returned me to the hospital. Here I am today. The encounter made me realize that there is nothing as good as rest. It is very important to sleep. I work so hard and I believe that of all comedians in Nigeria, I am the only one with so many brands, I have Crack Ya Ribs, Laff for Christ’s Sake and Festival of Love.”</em></div>

They gave me drugs to shrink the tumour but I did not rest well and that is why it came back last year. I did not rest at all, after my surgery in America, I resumed doing my shows. I thank God for everything.</em></div>

Women’s rights group, Pro-Femmes Twese Hamwe, complained to the Rwanda Media Commission, which has already scheduled a meeting to discuss on the controversial statement made by the pastor, next week.<br />

The Seventh Day Adventist preacher, Nicolas Niyibikora, told listener:<br />

Women are out of God’s favour and there is nothing good you can find in women. If you’ve read the Bible, who brought the sin into the world? It was not a man, but a woman.”<br />
<br />
The sermon has angered rights groups who stated that such words “can bring hatred and conflict among Rwandans if nothing is urgently done about it.”<br />
<br />
The Seventh Day Adventists in Rwanda have made efforts to distance themselves from Niyibikora, stating that he was expelled from the church some five years ago.<br />
<br />
But chairperson Jeanne d’arc Kanakuze of the pro-women group said the comments were discriminatory and could incite hate against women.<br />
<br />
“Apart from being contradictory to the laws of our country starting with the Constitution, the sermon is also at odds with international principles against discrimination and undermining human beings,” Kanakuze said.<br />

They are demanding that the pastor and station must be made to publicly apologise to all Rwandans and to women in particular.<br />
<br />

The Secretary-General of Interpol, Jurgen Stock, has recommended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a model for the African continent in the fight against corruption.<br />
<br />
He said this on Friday when he led a delegation of the Interpol to the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Stock, who was received by the Acting EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu, was delighted at the efforts of the anti-graft agency and assured them of the global organisation’s support at the international level.<br />
<br />
He also commended the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for its efforts in fighting corruption in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“I am delighted to be here and it’s mainly an opportunity to thank the Government and the EFCC for its cooperation,” he said in a statement signed by the Commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The Interpol boss further stressed the need to understand the global directions of organised crimes, noting that “the world is taking advantage of globalisation to commit crime and it’s a threat to all nations”.<br />
<br />
“Interpol is committed to supporting the EFCC, and indeed, other agencies to build global security architecture and ensure that adequate information is made available amongst other infrastructure to support the Commission.<br />
<br />
“We understand your needs and we will see where we can come in and unite forces to fight against the Global phenomenon of crime,” he added.<br />
<br />
On his part, Magu commended the delegation for the visit and thanked Stock for finding time out of his busy schedule as the Secretary General of Interpol.<br />
<br />
He said, “The EFCC has always had a good rapport with the Interpol and has always enjoyed collaboration with the organisation, especially in the area of information sharing.”<br />
<br />
The anti-graft agency boss advocated for a borderless platform to further support efficiency in information sharing culture with the global organisation.<br />
<br />
He also called for more collaboration with the Interpol which has 192 member states, saying it was essential for the effective operation of the EFCC.<br />
<br />
Other members on the Interpol entourage include the Head of Interpol Nigeria, Olusola Subair; Head of Interpol – Regional Bureau for West Africa, Kedji Abbe; and Deputy Head of Interpol Nigeria, Bankola Lanre, among others.<br />

Prince Kassim Afegbua, the spokesman to ex-Military President Ibrahim Babangida, claimed on Friday that he has been receiving death threats from unknown quarters following his issuance of a statement asking President Muhammadu Buhari to jettison his reelection bid in 2019.<br />

The authors of the death threats are not sparing his family, Afegbua said moments after his interrogation on the statement by the Department of State Security Service (DSS).<br />
<br />
The former EdoState commissioner said in a statement in Abuja that he has been receiving phone calls threatening him and his family.<br />
<br />
But he vowed that never would he be intimidated by anyone or group for issuing the statement .<br />
<br />
<br />
He was first invited for questioning by the police on Wednesday and later by the DSS on the statement.<br />
<br />
Afegbua declared that nothing would stop him from exercising his right of free speech.<br />
<br />
His words: “In the last six days, I have gone through traumatic experience when I was declared wanted by the Nigeria Police.<br />
<br />
“ By the strength of that unprofessional declaration, I was treated like a common criminal and fugitive until I showed up at the Police Headquarters Abuja to physically present myself.<br />
<br />
“After what the Police termed a no case issue, they were apologetic and I took my leave.<br />
<br />
“ In the evening of that day, Wednesday 7th February, 2018 I got a phone call inviting me to the Headquarters of the Directorate of State Security (DSS).<br />
<br />
“I honoured the invitation on Thursday and spent seven hours waiting for attention. I left the office at 6.50pm when it became clear nobody was ready to tell me what the invitation was meant for. I was informed to report back on Friday 9th February, 2018 at 11am.<br />
<br />
“On arrival on Friday, having spent two hours, I was attended to by the Director of Operations and two others who interrogated me on the said statement I issued.<br />
<br />
” My interrogation was recorded electronically and was made to write a statement affirming the issued statement, having collected all my personal details; house address, account number, international passport number and other information.<br />
<br />
“I find this whole episode quite nauseating and utterly condemnable. I cannot rationalise why just a statement would amount to subjecting me to rigorous interrogation especially when there was no complainant.”<br />
<br />
Afegbua said the Nigeria Police and the DSS were at best meddlesome interloper engaging in sheer bullying,<br />
<br />
He added: “The action of the Nigeria Police coupled with that of the State Security Service is at best that of a meddlesome interloper and sheer bullying, leaving serious developmental issues to chasing shadows with a view to intimidate, harass and embarrass me.<br />
<br />
“Let me state at this point that my life is in danger as we speak. I have been receiving series of unknown phone calls from people threatening me and my family.<br />
<br />
“But I am resolute in the true spirit of a free born, that threats, intimidation, harassment and psychological torturing has never and will not stop me from exercising my right of free speech as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; as well as carrying out my professional responsibility.<br />
<br />
“I will not submit to intimidation, harassment and threats. Certainly not. I have just a life to live and no one under God will live forever.”<br />
<br />
“This experience to me is an eye opener in so many ways. I feel a sense of personal gratitude to several of Nigeria’s foremost legal luminaries who maintained a constant touch and gave useful legal advice throughout the period of this travails.<br />
<br />
“I am most humbled. And the Almighty Allah will meet all of you in your hour of need. On a lighter note, the support, accolades and motivation I received during this period have given me added confidence to seek elective public office in no distant future.”<br />

“My intervention in the governance process of Nigeria wasn’t an accident of history. Even as a military government, we had a clear-cut policy agenda on what we needed to achieve. We recruited some of the best brains and introduced policies that remain some of the best in our effort to re-engineer our polity and nation.<br />

“We saw the future of Nigeria but lack of continuity in government and of policies killed some of our intentions and initiatives. According to her “It was a mystery to me too. I have been saving the money in the bank, but I found it difficult to account for it. So I started saving it in a vault in the office. Prof Oloyede is not only battling with fraud within his office but also syndicates that have been feeding fat on JAMB for years. The Board Registrar confirmed that the mystery snake fraud is one of the almost 100 fraud cases he’s tackling. According to him, “We are deeply worried by the incessant cases of candidates being defrauded by registration syndicates and CBT operators. The planning and operation of our CBT examination begin with the registration exercise. At this stage, we monitor the effectiveness of the telecommunication network to be used during the examination. Some of our CBT operators are found to have collaborated with these syndicates to carry out registration irregularities that frustrate the credibility of our examination.</div>

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dragged the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, and 14 other Nigerian officials to a United States of America District Court over alleged complicity in the extra-judicial killings of its members.<br />
<br />
IPOB alleged that the extra-judicial killings happened during protests over the arrest and detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.<br />
<br />
Those dragged to the US court, aside Buratai and Idris are: Lawal Musa Daura; Ibrahim Attahiru; M.I. Ibrahim; Kasim Umar Sidi; Issah Maigari Abdullahi; former IGP Solomon Arase; Abia and Anambra state governors, Okezie Ikpeazu and Willie Obiano; Habila Hosea; Peter Nwagbara; James Oshim Nwafor; Hosea Karma; Bassey Abang and Johnson Babatunde Kokumo.<br />
<br />
The suit was filed based on two US’ statutes; the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA or ATS – the Alien Tort Statute) and the Torture Victims Protection Act (TVPA).<br />
<br />
Both laws have extra-territorial reach, meaning they allow US federal courts to assert long-arm jurisdiction which extends beyond the borders of US.<br />
<br />
ATCA provides that ‘the district courts shall have original jurisdiction on any civil action by an alien (foreigner) for a civil wrong committed in violation of the law of nations or a treaty of the United States.’<br />
<br />
Since 1980, courts have interpreted this statute to allow foreign citizens to seek remedies in US courts, for human rights violations and for conducts committed outside the US.<br />
<br />
The TVPA of 1991 is a statute which permits civil suits in the US against foreign individuals who, acting in an official capacity for any foreign nation, committed torture and/or extra-judicial killings.<br />
<br />
In the suit, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said the banned group’s lawyers argued that “the case is convincing.<br />

Kwankwaso commended the Hausa community in the state for coming out en-masse to show support for one of their own.<br />

He described the recent killings in the country as unfortunate and called on the Federal Government to show more concern towards the governed.<br />

On his remarked, the state chairman of the Kwankwasiyya movement, John Ndiche, commended Kwankwaso for coming to see them despite his tight schedules.<br />

He gave assurances that the state would support his ambition, praying God to grant him victory.

Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, who read Articles 1(1); 2(1); 1(5) and 1(7), on Thursday, in Abuja, during a special consultative meeting with 17 Directors-General of parastatals under his ministry, said the order, when fully implemented, would help Nigeria reduce capital flight, enhance local capacity, strengthen local manpower development, encourage indigenous technology capacity, as well as enhance national self-reliance and restore national pride.<br />

Dr Onu said the order also proclaimed, especially in Article 1(5) that MDA’s should ensure that before the award of any contract, Nigerian counterpart staff were engaged from the conception stage to the end of the project.<br />

According to him: “I am confident that with the signing by Mr President of this Presidential Executive Order, we have initiated a very important step in the onward march of Nigeria towards developing the necessary local capacity needed for us to look inwards in our search for solutions to our numerous problems.<br />

“Indeed, it is an important step towards moving Nigeria away from being a mere consumer country to an important producer nation.<br />

<br />
“It will strengthen the patronage of made in Nigeria goods and services by ensuring that under Article 1(1) producing entities shall give preference to Nigeria companies and firms in the award of a contract, in line with the Public Procurement Act 2007.” He explained.<br />

The minister said this constituted only a small part of the revolutionary content of the order, which would play a critical role in efforts to build a better country that every Nigerian could proudly call his or her own.<br />

Bello threw his weight behind the National Assembly in its rearrangement of the order of election, saying that it would deny “bad” legislators the chance to be re-elected hiding under the cover of the “Buhari Tsunami” as was the case in 2015.<br />

While expressing confidence that Buhari would be re-elected in a landslide, he added: “I so much appreciate this. I think if you observe critically what happened in the last election where Mr President was elected along with other members of National Assembly, then we called it Buhari tsunami, where the good, the bad and the ugly were all put together and elected, it is either going to be in their interest that the Buhari tsunami will return them or everybody will be on his or her own.<br />

“Let Buhari return and let Nigerians select the good ones out of the bad ones to return to the National Assembly.<br />

“Whichever order it comes, in the upcoming general elections, I can assure you that Mr President will win a landslide and the good ones will return to the National Assembly.”<br />

Asked if he believed that the lawmakers would lose out under the reordering, he argued: “They have the choice to make and they have made their choice that the goodwill of Mr President should not rob on the bad ones.<br />

“Surely, the good ones on their own account will return to the National Assembly at the appropriate time.”<br />
<br />
The governor also supported the appointment by President Buhari of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to lead the reconciliation process within the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), saying that he supported any move made by the president.<br />

“Of course. Whatever Mr President believes in, his judgement and his wisdom I believe in him. And I believe in his ability to bring all party members together,” he said.<br />

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, has asked Nigerians to let politicians know that can no longer ‘buy’ their way into elective positions by ensuring that the electoral processes are not tampered with.<br />

He said that until the problem of vote-buying is tackled in the country, those in government will remain irresponsible and non-responsive to the aspirations of the people.<br />
<br />
<br />
Jega said this in Abuja on Friday at an interactive forum organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development, CDD, to interrogate how African government’s can reconcile procedural democratic practices with substantive democracy.<br />
<br />
He noted that the struggle for democracy to survive in Africa has been characterized by frustration because of the failure of governance to satisfy the aspirations and expectations of the people as well as promote stability.<br />
<br />
Jega also decried the mode of politics in most parts of Africa which he said excludes a large segment of the population, especially women and youths from the political process.<br />
<br />
On the issue of corruption, the erstwhile INEC boss disclosed that reliance of democratic governments in Africa on extractive revenue such as sales of crude oil as opposed to tax-based revenue raised a major challenge to the fight against corruption.<br />
<br />
<br />
He, however, maintained that despite the frustrations of democracy, militarianism was not an option.<br />
<br />
His words: “Unless the people let politicians know that they cannot buy their way into office every four or five years, through the ballot box, they will never be responsible and responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people.<br />
<br />
“Voters should realize that they are critical stakeholders that deserve to be listened to. Hence, it is imperative they begin to protect the integrity of the electoral process so as to have sufficient moral ground to hold those in governance accountable.<br />
<br />
“Relying exclusively on extractive revenue is unhealthy for good governance and democracy. All a public office holder needs to do to loot the treasure is simply to divert funds accruing to government from the extractive sector of the economy.<br />
<br />
<br />
“However, if the government raises bulk of its revenue by compelling people to pay their taxes, the people will in turn be interested in knowing how the taxes they paid were utilized, and that will reduce the level of the corruption perpetuated by those in government.”<br />
<br />
“We need to careful with what the frustrations of democracy can lead us into. Militarianism should never again be an option for us. Democracy may not be the only game but it is a major game in town,” he concluded.<br />

The video was taken same day Ebony died. The 20-year-old is seen in good spirit as she spends time with her family. Her mother had reportedly just returned from the UK and Ebony went to see her. Unfortunately, she met her untimely death while returning.</div>

According to police, the 20-year-old singer and two military officers were in an SUV and driving from Sunyani towards Kumasi when it collided head-on with a VIP bus heading towards Sunyani from Kumasi. Ebony was crushed to death along with a young lady who was also captured in the video of Ebony’s final moments.</div>

The two military officers in the SUV also died. Ebony and her female companion both died wearing the same clothes they were wearing in the video of their final moments.</div>

Gov. Obaseki of Edo State, has set up a N10 million education fund for the training of two children of late David Okoniba, whose death was allegedly caused by an exchange with a police officer at Upper Igun, Third Junction area of Benin.<br />

He disclosed this when he led some members of his cabinet on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased. The governor said he was at the victim’s home to assure his relatives that the government share in their grief, assuring them that those culpable in the killing will be brought to book.<br />

As South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma is facing being ousted from power, his fifth wife, Tobeka Madiba-Zuma, on Friday warned that “things are about to get ugly”.<br />

In the post she praises Zuma, calling him by his clan names before warning that "It's going to be ugly. Don't fight someone who is not fighting you."<br />

In a reply to one of the comments by @sekgakam, who asked "Kusazoshuba, really?" Madiba said her husband didn't join the African National Congress (ANC) in 1991.<br />

"Kusazoshipha ukotshi darling. UMsholozi did not join the ANC in 1991, jumped ship nor hip hopped between the struggle and wealth accumulation. He left home at a tender age to fight apartheid.
